Fernie Castle: 10 Reasons To Choose This Scottish Wedding Venue
When it comes to castle wedding venues in Scotland, we certainly aren’t short of them.
And this means you will have a fantastic selection to choose from.
Fernie Castle which is located in the Kingdom of Fife, is certainly worth your consideration if you are looking in this part of the country.
In addition to a beautiful circular Ballroom, this 14th century castle has luxury accommodation for up to 40 guests.
Let’s take a closer look at what a Fernie Castle wedding would be like.
Fernie Castle Location
There are some fabulous wedding venues in Fife, and Fernie Castle is well located if you live in Dundee or Perth.
The City of Discovery is closest at 15 miles, with a journey time of approximately 25 minutes.
Although Perth is not far behind at 20 miles, with a journey time of roughly 35 minutes.
Both Edinburgh and Stirling can be driven from in less than 1 hour too.
When you arrive you will find ample onsite parking for your guests.
And despite having a narrow drive, coach access should be ok if you are planning to put on transport.
Fernie Castle Setting
Fernie Castle is not your typical exclusive use wedding venue, and you can just hire the individual rooms that you need.
This could be the Great Hall for your ceremony, the Balfour Suite for your reception, and a few of the bedrooms.
With the rest of the hotel remaining open to the public.
Or you could take the entire castle exclusively which would be considerably more expensive, but would have the benefit of giving you absolute privacy.
Either way the historic atmosphere and beautiful surroundings, will provide the perfect backdrop for your special day.
Originally built in the 14th century, Fernie Castle remained a private home until 1960.
It was then converted into a hotel, and today is owned and managed by Neil and Mary Blackburn.
As you can imagine the property is full of character with fairytale turrets, and yet it has all the modern comforts expected in the 21st century.
Be sure to look out for the Keep Bar which dates back to 1530, and is a truly unique setting to relax with a drink.
Also worth mentioning is that over 1,000 weddings have been hosted at the castle, so you can rest assured that you are in well practiced hands.
Fernie Castle Accommodation
Fernie Castle has 20 individually appointed ensuite bedrooms, which can sleep up to 38 guests.
The rooms are made up of: 5 suites; 2 king & queen doubles; 11 squire & lady double/twins; and 2 singles.
Whilst your guests will get preferential rates, only 50% of the rooms can be booked by one function in advance.
That is of course unless you take the venue exclusively.
There is a lovely Bridal Suite in the turret, or if you are feeling really adventurous, the Treehouse in the grounds which sleeps a further 2 people.
Fernie Castle Ceremony
Religious, civil, and humanist ceremonies are all welcome at Fernie Castle, and you can get married both inside the castle and outside in the grounds.
Weather permitting an outdoor ceremony on the front lawn could be fantastic.
However if you are concerned about the rain, there are some excellent indoor options too.
How about the Great Hall with its wood panelled ceiling, and capacity to seat 80 guests?
Or for more space you could go for the beautiful Balfour Suite, which can seat up to 180 guests.
Fernie Castle Reception
For your drinks reception the Great Hall is a fabulous option, and it can comfortably accommodate 80 guests.
You can also use this room for your dinner reception, assuming you only need to seat 50 people for your wedding breakfast.
Most people go for the Balfour Suite however, which is an interesting circular room that overlooks the loch.
It has its own bar, and French doors which open out onto a nice patio area.
In addition to this it can seat 155 guests comfortably.
Fernie Castle Catering
The catering is handled internally at Fernie Castle.
They have created a selection of set menus for you to choose from, which have been designed to appeal to all tastes.
Special dietary requirements can be discussed, as well as any customisation you might have in mind.
There is also a children’s menu available.
When it comes to the drinks, the castle has a well stocked bar with plenty of choice.
Fernie Castle Grounds
If you are lucky enough to enjoy some nice weather, there are 17 acres of wooded grounds to take advantage of at Fernie Castle.
It’s a lovely place to go for a stroll, and it won’t take you long to find the private loch.
There’s also some fantastic outdoor spaces for your guests, and you may even be able to have your drinks reception on the front lawn.
Most importantly there are some terrific areas for wedding photography.
It would be great to get some shots with the beautiful Scottish countryside in the background.
Fernie Castle Unique Feature
How about this for a unique feature?
Fernie Castle has a Treehouse Suite, which sleeps 2 people in complete luxury.
It’s located 500 meters from the castle, and is perched high up on six sycamore trees.
Inside you will find a kingsized bedroom, an octagonal bathroom, hand made furniture, and all the modern conveniences.
It even has three balconies, one complete with swing, and all of them providing great views over the grounds.
